Originally bred for safeguarding Tibetan temples, farms, and villages, the watchful and extra large Tibetan Mastiff has a long, thick double coat, strong territorial instincts, and aloofness toward strangers. This is combined with protective fearlessness when confronting a perceived threat. The breed’s immense size and strength is a deterrent by itself. With moderate energy requirements, the Tibetan Mastiff exhibits devotion to its family, and consistency is required through early socialization and consistent training in order for this breed to thrive in the home.. A strong leader with working dog experience that is ready and able to take on the challenge of this breed’s characteristics is important. Grooming the thick, extensive coat of this magnificent beast is a big responsibility and requires regular brushing sessions to help combat shedding of the coat and prevent matting. Not the breed for the average family, this is a dog that belongs in a home that is ready to dedicate the time, energy, and money needed to keep this dog healthy both physically and mentally.
