Originally aiding Newfoundland fishermen in rescuing drowned sailors, the Newfoundland, known for its powerful lung capacity and muscular frames covered by waterproof double coats, excelled in hauling heavy ropes and equipment. With webbed feet, it retrieves optimally from both land and sea. This breed excels as a gentle companion. It acts fearlessly and instinctively to safeguard children but does require early and consistent socialization and proper training to prevent over protectiveness. The coat sheds heavily and requires extended brushing sessions to prevent matting. This is not the breed for the average family due to its sheer size, as well as physical and financial needs.
