The large Rhodesian Ridgeback, originally bred in Africa, is an imposing yet sensitive dog. It boasts a muscular lion-tawny coat with a distinctive dorsal ridge and exhibits a focused, dignified attitude combined with intelligence and the ability to detect friend or foe when properly socialized. The breed assesses its surroundings thoroughly, utilizing intelligence and observation skills inherited from guarding settlements, children, and livestock. The primary aim is to permit peaceful coexistence, intervening with fierce defensive reactions only when aggressive actions dictate, protecting apprehensively. This breed thrives in a dog savvy home with an owner ready to take on the responsibility of providing this large breed with his physical and mental needs. The Ridgeback is not for the average pet owner, and requires space and someone willing to put in the considerable time and energy needed for this breed to be content in the home.
